Show of Hands will make their voices heard when they play London’s Hyde Park this Saturday (March 26) at the TUC’s March for the Alternative rally, expected to be attended by up to 100,000 people.
The rally, featuring numerous speakers, including Labour leader Ed Milliband, will follow the TUC-organised March for the Alternative through central London, with thousands of people converging on the capital to protest against the coalition government’s cuts in public spending.
Seen as the biggest and most important street protest in London since the anti-Iraq war rally of eight years ago, the march will start at 11am at Victoria Embankment with some 650 coaches and a fleet of charter trains bringing union members and individuals to the capital from all over the country.
The marchers will head for Hyde Park where the rally is scheduled to take place between 1.30pm -4.30pm, compered by actor/ TV presenter Tony Robinson, with giant screens relaying the music and speeches to the crowd.
One of just three key acts invited to perform at the event by the Musicians’ Union, Show of Hands with Miranda Sykes will perform a short set around 3pm, while other performances will be given by London Brass and Rhythms of the City, the UK’s premier samba percussion squad.
Show of Hands’ award-winning frontman and singer songwriter Steve Knightley was the subject of BBC Radio 4’s Open Country on Saturday April 24. If you missed the original transmission it is being repeated at 3pm on Thursday (29th). It is also available on the BBC iPlayer.
